About the Choir

Cor Waunarlwydd was formed in 1970 when some of the boys in Cor Plant Waunarlwydd became too old to sing in the children's choir. For those of you who don't know, Waunarlwydd is a small village on the outskirts of Swansea. The children's choir, which is still going strong, was formed in 1965 by its present conductor, Davida Lewis.

Over the years, the older choir has gone from strength to strength, and now has around 60 members aged from 14 years upwards. Though it has members from all over Swansea, most of them come from Waunarlwydd itself. Indeed, as time has passed, some of its older members have seen their own children join the Children’s Choir!

The Choir is in great demand to give concerts all over Wales and beyond, and has appeared on television and radio on many occasions. It has also been successful at Eisteddfodau, including at the Urdd and National Eisteddfod.

It was also the first mixed choir to be invited to sing at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff to warm up the crowd before a Wales Rugby International.

Members have also travelled abroad, to Swansea’s twin town, Mannheim in Germany on 9 occasions, and to Eindhoven in the Netherlands on 3 occasions.

This is the choir's third trans-Atlantic trip, following successful tours to Canada in 2000 and California two years ago. Around 40 members have made the journey, joined by a similar number of supporters, family and so on.
