Kusadasi and Ephesus

This is slightly inaccurate. In between Rhodes and Kusadasi/Ephesus, we did visit the island of Patmos, which is home to a beautiful Byzantine church and the supposed location where St. John write the Book of Revelations. Unfortunately, we were hampered in our efforts to take picutres there by a lack of a flash and a tour guide who felt it was a race to see which guide could finish their tour first.

Kusadasi was our first city in the country of Turkey, but the site we visited was the ancient city of Ephesus. It is one of the largest archaeological sites of an ancient city we saw, and also one of the better preserved ones.

This is Ed leaning on the fragments of a column which probably pre-dates the Roman Empire. Makes you proud that you can be a bum on such a historical artifact.

This is a cool-looking bull-head which was the crest of a column at one point.

This is a photo of Frances and I passing through the Pillars of Hercules. Ancient legend has it that if you touch both pillars while passing through them, you would be granted the strength of Hercules. Nowadays, all you get is a rerun of a babes-and-beefcake adventure show.

This is the front of the library of Ephesus. It is probably one of the taller structures still standing in the ancient city. Supposedly, the brothel of Ephesus was located directly behind where I was standing to take the picture, and there was a secret passageway from the library to the brothel. Oh, those sneaky ancient Greeks.

The library again, this time shot from a Dramatic Angle.
