The Page Formerly Known as the New York City Area Blues Calendar
Dear readers:
The few regular readers of this site have probably noticed that it
hasn't been updated since January 1998. More than a year later, I've
decided it's finally time to close up shop here. I'd like to thank
those who came by and who helped out by sending in club listings.
For those of you visiting New York City and looking for a blues fix,
here's some information about clubs and venues in the area:
- Chicago B.L.U.E.S. 73 8th Ave bet. 13th & 14th St. (212)
924-6811. Another fine, if pricey and trendy, club. Closest subway
stop is 14th Street on the A/C/E subway line, or the 8th Avenue stop on
the L line.
- Terra Blues. 149 Bleeker Street, NYC. (212) 777-7776.
Showcases local talent, and early shows often have no cover charge
(though bands will pass around a hat). Closest subway stops are the
West 4th Street stop, serviced by the A, B, C, D, E, F, and Q trains, or
the Christopher St/Sheridan Square stop, serviced by the 1/9.
- Kavehaz Blues and Jazz Club. 123 Mercer Street, NYC.
This club is in SOHO just below Prince Street, and features an open
blues jam every Monday night. Closes subway stop is the Prince Street
stop on the N/R line.
- The Bottom Line. 15 W 4th Street at Mercer. (212) 228-7880. A
wonderful cabaret/club, which sometimes has blues talent. Check local
listings before visiting. Closest subway stops are the West 4th Street
stop, or the 8th St/NYU stop on the N/R line.
- The Blue Note. 131 W 3rd
Street. (212) 475-8592. More of a jazz club, but B.B. King performs
here every now and again, and there are often acts of interest to a
blues fan. Tends to be very expensive. Closest subway stop is at West
4th Street.
- Manny's Car Wash. One
of the finest blues clubs in New York City, which is unfortunately
closed at this time due to skyrocketing rents and a drop in bar
attendance on the Upper East Side. Visit the web site to check for any
updates.
To find what's happening on your local visit, visit the Village Voice website, or jump
straight to the Listings
Page and do a search by keyword, category, or week.
