Sequel News

Short version: there are no plans currently for a Mac version of Fallout 2.

Apparently, the higher-ups at Interplay (The ones who cancelled Shattered Steel and Tempest 2000 for the Mac? The ones who have not placed a single advertisement for Fallout in a single Mac-oriented magazine?) feel that the sales of the Mac version of Fallout aren't good enough to justify development costs for the sequel.

I wanted to write a long polemic about how much this ticks me off. I just don't know if it's worth it.

If you want to try and change their minds, there's 2 things you can do:

  1. Write a POLITE letter to Interplay Customer Service at:

    Interplay
    16815 Von Karman Avenue
    Irvine, CA 92606
    Attn: Executive Producer

Note that it says "write" there and I'm not providing an e-mail address. Nothing says you care quite so much as an actual written letter.
  2. Buy at least one copy of Mac Fallout for a friend. The holidays are over, but you can show that you carry the spirit of the holidays throughout the year, or something.

A new Fallout 2 for Macintosh advocacy web site has sprung up. It neatly summarizes all the ways you can help bring Fallout 2 to the Mac. Check it out!

These are Usenet posts from Tim Cain, Fallout Producer and Lead Programmer and all-around great guy (who wouldn't mind doing a Mac version, by the way), which were posted to the comp.sys.mac.games.adventure newsgroup:

Currently, the PC version of Fallout is outselling the Mac version 9 to
1. I don't know if this is a "good sales" figure for the Mac, but I
don't think the people at Interplay who make the decisions are too
impressed. Personally, I am neither for or against the idea of making
Fallout 2 for the Mac. It wouldn't be difficult technically, so that's
why the decision will 100% sales driven.

I asked and the response was to please send a letter to Customer
Service. From there, it will go to the right people.

Again, however, I'm sure they'll look at sales. If Fallout, with all of
its great reviews and with little to no RPG competition on the Mac,
still can't sell more copies than about 10% of the PC version, then it
becomes a question of resources and profits.

Tim.
