The Vision
It all started several years ago
in Libertyville IL. Dave, hereafter known as Elwood, had just
finished several real good bottles of cognac. Elwood was confronted
by a gigantic penguin who said to him "Go and redeem yourself."
(Never mind that it turned out to be a waiter in a tuxedo asking
him if he had seen the bill.) Next he saw a great light shining
from the North and heard the sound of music (which later turned
out to be the band he was dancing to all night). All of a sudden
he jumped up and went to the middle of the dance floor. Incredibly,
his feet began to move wildly around the dance floor to the tune
of Soul Man as he danced around exactly like Elwood Blues in the
Blues Brothers movie. It all became clear to him. Of course it
would work. It would be awesome and very few cars would need to
be smashed up.
Meanwhile, at the same table, his friend George, hereafter
known as Jake, had been extremely depressed at the passing of
his hero, John Belushi. Jake, who had himself devoured more than
a few scotch and waters, was struck by the same light! He leaped
to his feet, did a cart wheel in the middle of the floor, (well
actually it was more like he spun around and fell on his butt)
and ran up to Elwood screaming, "The band, Elwood! The Band!".
They were both promptly escorted out of the dance and told to
go home and sleep it off.
Later the next morning, Elwood woke up excited and with a
slight headache which improved his concentration. He ran to the
kitchen yelling "It has to be here." He tore through
the kitchen drawers, but didn't find it. He ran outside to the
car, opened the glove box, and, yelling " and God bless the
United States of America," pulled out a map. It was just
as it had been revealed to him in his vision. It was exactly 106
miles from his new home in Wind Lake, Wisconsin to Chicago. Not
only that but his friend lived near Grayslake and would forever
be known to him as Grayslake Jake. He came back into his house,
smiling broadly, where he met his wife who said, "Not now,
I have a headache," because, after all, it was only 6 AM.
Elwood just smiled at her and said, "That's OK. We're on
a mission from God."
Several years passed, and he was beginning to doubt his vision.
They had the vision. They had the drive. They had the determination.
They had some dance routines. They even had the sun glasses and
the funny looking hats. What they didn't have was a band. One
day, as if the Lord (or the penguin if you prefer), had heard
him in his distress, he got a call from his friend Jeff who had
his own band.
"Hey Dave," Jeff said," can you sing?"
He needed a singer for his band.
"No, but I can dance like Elwood."
"Good! Then you'll do it."
Elwood contacted his friend and told him they had found a
band. Thus the vision was fulfilled.
