BMW R1100RS Hardbag Scuff Guards

Review

One time I forgot a motorcycle needed a (deployed) kickstand when left unattended and dropped my R11RS. DUH!!! At least I was smart enough to have installed the valve cover guards, so the engine was protected. However, my painted hardbag was no longer painted along the lower front corner. I tried touching up the paint, but the pearl white was hard to match even with BMW's kit. I decided to install the ($75) BMW scuff guards, or as they call them, the "impact protectors for system panniers."

The pads are a black rubber and have double-sided, industrial strength, tape along the inside edges. The installation was straight forward. The instructions include templates for exact pad positioning, and the fit of the pads is very good. Since my bags were painted, I had to scuff the paint with 400 grit sandpaper for the tape to hold.

You can decide for yourself if you like the way the pads look, but if I were to do it again, I'd leave off the upper pads and just cover the bottoms. The corner is now definately protected and I can sit the case down without worrying about scratching the bottom. After 2 years and 30k miles, the tape has not come loose even a little bit.
