While on a holiday weekend trip, a friend and her husband ran into an unexpected problem. The gas station attendant needed the key to their CR-V's locking gas cap.
"What locking gas cap--we don't have a locking cap!"
"Oh yes you do," was the reply.
With a quarter tank of gas, far away from a major city, on a holiday weekend, they spent a few tense hours finding a locksmith and getting the cap removed. Since there weren't any other gas caps available, they used the ex-locking cap, only to have the "check engine" light come on about 100 miles down the road. Not wanting to ruin their brand-new CR-V, they stopped in the next town and waited until the next day to call their Honda dealership. They were told, as long as it seemed to be running okay, it would probably be okay to drive their CR-V home--but bring it in right away. When the dealership checked out what was wrong, the ex-locking gas cap was found to be the culprit. Too much or too little pressure in the fuel tank will trip the "check engine" light.
Later on, my friend's husband remembered, at the previous fill-up, their cap had dropped behind the pumps. He had grabbed what he thought was their cap.
Taking their story to heart, I decided it was time to add the gas cap holder I had read described on Bing's great CR-V Information Exchange pages. The holder is for a Honda, but not specifically for the CR-V. I ordered it from HondaParts.com for $2.73 (list is $3.77). Definitely affordable. UPDATE 2/27/2003: I found out the holder is for a Civic and is Honda Part #366403 74423-SP0-000. The price has gone up...it's now $5.75.
