Honda CR-L (Comfortable Runabout Limo)

Background

I started working on a CR-V limousine months ago, but imediately ran into trouble with the tailend. Wouldn't a real limo have a trunk? Ever wonder why SUV's don't have trunks? I'll tell you why--they look real ugly.

Especially puzzling is the fact many SUV's styling cues make it easy to picture the vehicle with a trunk. Squint your eyes and take a look at the ones which have a blacked-out rear pillar and you'll see what I mean. Even the CR-V is easy to imagine with a trunk, but when I erased everything following the c-pillar, it looked like the perfect pizza delivery vehicle. All it needed were 4 burners on the trunk lid to achieve a rear-ended-by-a-hotpoint look. Basically I got lost in what makes a trunk look like a trunk and put the design on the, so to speak, back burner.

An article in Automobile Magazine's September 1998 issue got me thinking about the CR-L again. It shows a radically stretched (140 inches) Mercedes-Benz ML320. The stretching was done by Frank DeLuca of Excalibur Extravaganza Limousines. I couldn't find a picture of the ML320 on the web, but here is a picture of a mega-stretched Lincoln Navigator and Hummer (the Merc is much better looking IMHO, at least a far as ultra-long 4X4's go). Most of all, the stock backend on the ML320 looked fine.

It was time to break out the electronic airbrush again...

Pictures

Here are two modestly stretched (60 inches) CR-V's and a bonus picture--a CR-V sedan.

Note: Pictures were taken with a Apple QuickTake 200 . Retouching was done with Denaba's Canvas on an Apple Macintosh PowerPC. (Click on image to view full-sized. It will appear in a new browser window.)

Once I created a CR-V trunk, I couldn't resist using it again. How about a sedan? How about a sedan with a boxy roofline? I tried reversing part of the a-pillar and using it for a nicer roofline, but got scared when it started looking like a giant 4-door Suzuki X-90 .

For your entertainment, here is the CR-V sedan with a formal roofline (trust me you really don't want to see the rounded roof version). Even this one makes me a little nervous. Let me know what you think.

Here is the original picture of my CR-V.
