All sorts of cool things are to be found on the Internet. I have a gigantic hierarchy of bookmarks -- esoteric places too numerous to share here. Probably the best advice I have is for people to hone their skills for using the search engine Google.
Because I don't have time to perfect this page right now, I'll just start by mentioning a few sites. Hopefully over time I'll get around to expanding and refining the list.

My favorite web comic is MegaTokyo by Fred Gallagher. A blend of manga style, anime in-jokes, techno-lunacy, and compelling characters, MegaTokyo has built a huge, loyal fan base. Fred is a humble and dedicated artist who treats his fans royally, spending hours upon hours doing sketches and autographs for them at conventions. I myself was treated to a sketch of Piroko when I met Fred at Sakura Con 2003 in Seattle.
My favorite anime hub is Anime Turnpike a.k.a. Anipike. Sites for just about any anime show of interest can be found in their directory. The best anime convention is Anime Expo, held every summer in Southern California. A couple of good vendors of anime goods are The Right Stuf International and AnimeNation. I also buy anime DVDs and translated manga through Amazon.
My favorite modern-day artist is Steve Hanks, whose works are available at the E.S. Lawrence Gallery
The best site for Macintosh issues is Macintouch; it's a source I've followed since I had a subscription to their monthly newsletter in 1985. A great collection of anecdotes behind the development of the Macintosh are at Folklore.org. To catch headline news for the computer industry, I breeze through News.com each day.
A great place for writers is Teresa Nielsen Hayden's blog, Making Light. Be sure to read the comments posted for each entry; the blog's readers are just as sharp and interesting as Teresa. I also enjoy reading author Neil Gaiman's blog. A more coarse but oftentimes entertaining road of ideas is John Scalzi's blog, Whatever.
More keen ideas spring from the mind of Nerdygirl, a friend of my co-worker, Sarge.
Partially a forum for design and partially a potpourri of observations and commentary, Signal vs. Noise always has astute posts. More closely focused on the design of user interfaces, Ask Tog reveals the thoughts of one of the brilliant guys behind the original Macintosh.
The magazines I subscribe to are Newtype USA, American Heritage of Invention and Technology, Macworld, The DVD LaserDisc Newsletter, Cooks Illustrated, and Nutrition Action. I enjoy reading The Wall Street Journal, but I can afford neither the time nor the subscription.
An assortment of things to think about: Soulforce, Human Rights Campaign, New Progressive Network, Responsible Wealth and its parent, United for a Fair Economy... If you are looking for a cause to champion, you can likely find it in Yahoo's Social Issues directory. Also, a good place to sort political fact from fiction is FactCheck.
And of course there is a wealth of transgender information on the internet.
